Meet KSPARKY: The Electrician Inspiring a New Generation
You may also know him as KSPARKY, an electrical influencer from San Diego with thousands of social media followers. Kevin Martinez’s journey reflects his commitment to mastering his craft and his dedication to sharing valuable knowledge with aspiring electricians and tradespeople worldwide.
The Journey Begins
Kevin's story began eight years ago when he entered the electrical field. He has roots in Tijuana and Zacatecas, Mexico. Like many electricians in Southern California, Spanish is his first language.
The 30-year-old is driven by a desire to contribute to his community. He embraced the challenges of the trade. With a strong work ethic, Kevin quickly progressed from an apprentice to a foreman, where he now oversees large commercial construction projects that often span several years.
The Birth of KSPARKY
In 2018, while working to hone his skills, Kevin noticed an online community of electricians sharing their journeys on social media. He decided to join the conversation.
“If they are doing it, then I can do it too,” he thought.
With a passion for visual storytelling, Kevin began documenting his daily projects, showcasing the tools of the trade and the intricacies of electrical work on platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and Trade Hounds.
What started as a personal project soon became a place where he could connect with others in the industry. His approach was straightforward: share what he loved, engage with followers, and foster a sense of community among tradespeople. Kevin quickly discovered that his authenticity resonated with many.
“I always tried to grow, to do things cleanly, because I realized that if you don't do it right, people will definitely tell you in the comments,” he joked.
Balancing Work and Influence
As Kevin's online presence grew, so did the demands of being a social media influencer. It became a second job—one that he enjoyed but required significant dedication. Balancing his responsibilities as an electrician with his role as an influencer was not easy.
“It keeps me busy, very busy...Even though I enjoy doing it, it does take time, and I think the more I grow, the more I’m talking to more people and trying to motivate more people.”
Kevin is committed to providing value to his followers. He spends time responding to messages and comments, often engaging with those who have technical questions or seek guidance on navigating their own careers in the electrical field.
“I really enjoy responding to messages or comments,” he shares. “If I can't do it during the day, I take some time at night to do it, also to talk with them and get to know them... Many people are dealing with the same issues, like trying to get into an electrical program, wanting to grow as a contractor, balancing school and work.”
This commitment to interaction sets Kevin apart as a relatable figure in a sea of influencers.
A New Generation of Electricians
One of Kevin's passions is highlighting the positive aspects of being a tradesperson. He understands the challenges new electricians face, especially in a rapidly evolving industry that blends traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. He encourages young electricians to embrace their unique opportunities while also emphasizing the importance of hard work and dedication.
“If I take them under my wing, I like teaching them the right way—just because you have social media doesn’t mean it’s a break or free time. It’s always with the mentality of doing things right,” he insists.
At NECA 2024, Kevin witnessed firsthand the enthusiasm of the new generation of electricians eager to learn and innovate. For Kevin, teaching the right way to approach the trade is a crucial aspect of his influence.
“I like to always promote positivity, to encourage, and to highlight the good things about being a tradesperson.”
Looking Ahead
As Kevin continues to grow both as an electrician and an influencer, he remains focused on fostering a supportive community for tradespeople. His digital presence shows his commitment to connecting with others, sharing insights, and learning from his peers.
With each post, Kevin Martinez inspires a new generation of electricians to embrace the trade, push boundaries, and take pride in their work. His journey from apprentice to journeyman foreman and social media influencer serves as a powerful reminder that success is not just about personal achievement; it’s also about uplifting others and sharing knowledge.
As he looks to the future, one thing is clear: KSPARKY is just getting started, and the electrical trade is better for it.
